Hawaiian Proverbs

    ‘A'a i ka hula, waiho ka hilahila i ka hale.
      When one wants to dance the hula, bashfulness should be left at home.
 
    ho’olohe ke pepeiao
      “listen carefully”
 
    nana I ka maka
      “observe with the eye”
 
    hana ka lima
      "work with the hands" (One learns by listening, observing and doing.)
 
    pa'a ka waha
      "don't interrupt your teachers; concentrate on what they are showing you"
 
    Kuhi no ka lima, hele no ka maka.
      "Where the hands move, there let the eyes follow."       (A rule in hula.)
 
    Pupukahi i holomua
      "Unite to move forward." Explanation: By working together we make progress.
 
    Lawe i ka ma'alea a ku'ono'ono.
      "Acquire skill and make it deep." Explanation: If you want to become really good at anything, you've got to study hard and practice long until it gets deep and becomes part of you.
 
    Kulia i ka nu'u.
      "Strive for the summit." Explanation: Strive for the very top of the mountain, strive for excellence. This was the motto of Hawaii's Queen Kapi'olani who did so much for her people.
 
    A'ohe pau ka 'ike i ka halau ho'okahi.
      "All knowledge is not taught in the same school." Explanation: One can learn from many sources.
